A What the Fuck'r!
Climb: Byrd Pinnacle (Trad) (5.7+)(100')
Wall: Byrd Pinnacle Beginner Lead: No, definitely not Pro: To 4" Conclusion WTF? What the FUCK! (But Fun!) This is an old-school, burly, sustained, committing climb that is harder than a 5.7+. In fact we did the 5.9 climb to the right of it (Xyphoid Left) and Stef thought Xyphoid Left was easier than Byrd Pinnacle (Rick thought the two were on par with each other.) We actually really like this climb. The rock is stellar (except near the top) and the moves are challenging. The protection is generally good. The start where the black petina begins is particularly heady and placing pro there is easier for a tall person. There are good rests and thank-God holds between the burley moves. At the top you have two options:(1) up the face to the anchors or around left up a chimney then out onto the face for the last bit. The face is easier (or so it looks) but you have some runout (and since we didn't go that way we can't comment on the rock quality.); Or (2) up a flared chimney that is protectable but stays with the strenuous theme of this climb. If you do the chimney, the back wall (where your feet are being placed) has some pretty crumbly flakes. The exit out onto a small ledge is behind you, then finish up to the anchors. |
