Beastie Boys come for a visit!
Climb: Space Case (Trad, 40 feet)
Wall: Case Face
Rope: We used a 70m
Good Lead for a New Trad Climber? Maybe. It has some challenge in the first 20 feet, a committing few moves of finger crack with small gear.
Conclusion WTF? What the FUN!
Space Case almost falls into the "Feisty" category for the beginning moves across the first 20 or so feet, but there's enough there and it's over quickly enough that it keeps it tilted onto the "Fun" side of the equation. There is a bolt down low, but by the time you get to the bolt, you can actually place something in the crack (if you preferred.) Stick clipping the bolt may alleviate some concerns since a fall before clipping in might result in some weird injuries while falling between a boulder and the wall.
Bring small to tiny gear for the crack. The crack is finger sized and requires a few finger jams to stay on the wall. Then face holds appear and the climb becomes low-angle and super cruiser. The main thing about this climb is getting down. Right now there is some tat on several horns, and if the tat remains, this location is really convenient. But, should that tat disappear, you will either need to (1) do a long traverse right to get to some bolted anchors atop another climb (we aren't sure how the difficult the traverse is or the extent of protection going this way) or (2) follow the crack up and over to rappel from bushes or a tree. Out of curiosity, Rick scoped that out that second option and said those bushes look pretty tiny/thin and to get to the tree, there is an approximately 20-foot exposed, unprotectable traverse - neither option is appealing. |
